Part Ten: Abortive Cleaning Attempt

So yesterday, Thursday that would be, we managed to get very nearly everything out of the house, with the help of two of Sue's friends and their pickup. We took them to Shoney's afterward, for dessert, planning to come back today and finish the cleaning. We left a overflowing recycling bin on the curb, and, knowing there was about a quarter-bin of recycling left that wouldn't fit, said 'well they pick up on alternate Fridays, this should be the Friday, and we'll put the rest in the bin tomorrow after they pick up.'

We were wrong about the Friday. Also, I was wrong about the utilities.

I had scheduled our service to end today, because they wouldn't do it on Saturday or Sunday, Sunday being the last day of the month, and I didn't really want to have to worry about August. I wasn't thinking about the fact that when you tell a power company an end date for service, they turn the service off that morning. The utility board in Knoxville (KUB) does the power, gas, and water, so the water in the house was also off. As a result, I couldn't vacuum, wash the sink, scrub the toilet (ok I could have, but then I wouldn't have been able to flush more than once), or magic eraser the walls (they require water). I could swiffer the floors, but they were so covered in dust bunnies as to make it not worthwhile, and I had failed to bring a broom. So we'll go back tomorrow morning, nice and early, and bring a couple bottles of water and a broom. Chris can mow while it's still coolish, and I'll do what I can inside.

Oh, and the food in the fridge and freezer was starting to melt. And, it seems, our new fridge is not as big as our old fridge. Stuff that filled about 2/3rds of our old freezer packs our new freezer to capacity, and the stuff that just fits in our fridge would have taken up only 1/2 of our old fridge. I have no idea how the fridge we got is so much smaller than the fridge we had, but that seems to be the way of things.

So, frustrating end to the day. I might, if I feel better later, try to put some stuff away in the new place, but we'll see. Right now, I'd probably get pissed off at how everything is in the way of everything else, and give up.
